Howdy Frisco -

February in Frisco: 70 degrees on Monday, ice storm warning by Wednesday, and somehow every restaurant patio is still packed. We don't make the rules, we just wear shorts and a puffer in the same week.

Let's get into it. ⬇️

🗳️ That Council Race? Not Over Yet

Remember the Jan. 31 special election for Frisco City Council Place 1? Turns out, 110 votes is close enough to fight for.

Candidate Mark Piland filed for a recount after losing to Ann Anderson 4,063 to 3,953. The city officially accepted the petition Feb. 16, and Collin and Denton County election officials have until Feb. 23 at 5 p.m. to post official recount results. Keep an eye on friscotexas.gov for the official recount results

If the results hold, the swear-in gets pushed to the March 3 council meeting. Meanwhile, this seat has had quite a journey (it opened up when John Keating stepped down to run for mayor).

I don't have a dog in this particular fight, but as someone who moved here in 2023, I'm paying closer attention to local politics lately.

🎱 Frisco Just Became the Pool Capital of the World (For a Week)

Sports City USA is adding another trophy to the shelf.

The 2026 U.S. Open Pool Championship, one of professional billiards' most prestigious tournaments, now in its 49th year, is coming to Embassy Suites by Hilton Dallas Frisco Convention Center, Aug. 25–30. It's the first time the event has ever been held in Frisco.

A few numbers worth knowing:

  • 256 players competing

  • $500,000 prize fund — the largest in World Nineball Tour Open circuit history

  • Estimated $1M+ economic impact for Frisco, per Visit Frisco

What makes this extra cool is the open format. Half the field is world-ranked professionals… but the other half? Open qualifiers. Meaning an amateur could theoretically line up against the best in the world. The CEO of Matchroom Multi Sport mentioned she'd love Joe Rogan to enter. That tracks.

Defending champion Aloysius Yapp will be back to defend his title.

The organizers made clear this isn't a one-time deal, they want to plant roots here and eventually launch a Texas Open, maybe even a Frisco Open. Sports City keeps stacking up.

📚 A Bookstore Is Coming to the Rail District and I'm Already Excited for Story Time

Frisco Booksellers is set to open this summer at 6959 Main St. in the Frisco Rail District, and honestly, this might be my favorite story of the week.

Owner Jen Bischof says the mission is simple: "put the right book into the right hands." The store will carry adult fiction and non-fiction, plus kids books from board books all the way through young adult. The opening of her bookstore is the perfect timing with the Rail District's full opening this summer as well.

But here's what really got me: they're planning story times, book clubs, author events, and school book fairs. Emily has been on a mission to make reading a thing in our house before our 4-year-old starts kindergarten. A local indie bookstore with story time? That's a Saturday morning win.

Check them out at friscobooksellers.com and mark your calendars for summer.
