Howdy Frisco -

Happy St. Patrick's Day! I just tried to convince my 4-year-old to wear green this morning and she informed me, very seriously, that she only wears pink. So here we are. The baby is in a onesie that technically has a frog on it, so I'm counting that. We're doing our best.

Let's get into it. ⬇️

πŸ† Heritage Coyotes Are State Champions

The Heritage High School boys basketball team beat Beaumont West Brook 60-47 on Saturday at the Alamodome in San Antonio, becoming the first Frisco ISD boys basketball team to ever win a UIL state title. Let that sink in.

Senior guard Bryson Howard was named tournament MVP after dropping 28 points and 15 rebounds. Senior Cameron Lomax added 17 points, 5 steals, and threw a picture-perfect alley-oop to Howard in the third quarter that essentially ended the comeback. It was over after that.

Heritage finished 34-2 and won their 29th straight game to close the season.

Senior forward Zion Minja said something after the game that hit different: "This state championship is going to bring the community so much closer than it's ever been. This is the first time the state championship has been brought to Frisco."

That's the kind of thing that makes you proud to live here.

Congrats, Coyotes. Frisco's got you.

πŸŽͺ The Circus is Literally in Town

Okay, I cannot not tell you about this.

Flip Circus, a big-top production from the family behind the legendary Circus Vazquez, is set up right now at Riders Field (7300 Roughriders Trail) and runs through March 30.

Here's what makes this one different from your typical arena circus: it's only 800 seats, and no seat is more than 50 feet from the ring. That's an insanely intimate setup. My girls would lose their minds being that close to the action.

The lineup includes:

  • 🎩 Italian illusionist Jimmy Saylon

  • 🀸 The Kung Fu Boys doing gravity-defying acrobatics

  • 🎯 Dede Larible, an eighth-generation circus artist with precision juggling

  • ✈️ A two-time Guinness World Record holder on single trapeze

  • 🎡 Live music throughout from the Flip Circus Band

Weeknight shows are at 7 p.m. Weekend shows are at 1, 4, and 7 p.m.

Tickets start at $20.88 for kids / $31.16 for adults. Emily and I are genuinely thinking about taking the girls this weekend. If you go, grab tickets at FlipCircus.com.

πŸ“š Texas ESA Deadline is Tonight

This is time-sensitive, so I'm putting it here.

If you've been thinking about applying for Texas' new Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) program, tonight at 11:59 p.m. is the deadline. Applications are submitted through a platform called Odyssey, and the state comptroller's office says families can still edit their submissions right up until the window closes.

Quick breakdown:

  • Private school students: ~$10,474 for tuition and related expenses

  • Homeschool students: $2,000

  • Students with disabilities: up to $30,000

Applications are not first-come, first-served; Odyssey won't start reviewing anything until after the deadline closes. So don't panic if you haven't submitted yet. You have until midnight.

As someone whose wife is planning to homeschool our oldest for kindergarten this fall, I'll be honest, we've been tracking this. The $2,000 homeschool allocation doesn't cover everything, but it's not nothing either.

A few important things to know:

  • ~156,000 applications have been submitted so far, and the program can fund roughly 90-100k students, so a lottery is likely

  • Priority goes first to students with disabilities, then lower-income families

  • Families above ~$165k household income are limited to 20% of total program funding

The application takes about 15 minutes.

🏠 Where Frisconians Are Moving To

While people are moving into Frisco from the coasts, some locals are cashing out and heading to places like Phoenix, Austin, and even smaller cities where their dollar stretches a bit further. Translation: Frisco is desirable… but not cheap, and some folks are taking their equity and running (honestly, can you blame them?).

And if you’re thinking about making a move, the agent you pick matters a lot. My wife Emily runs a referral service that helps you avoid the β€œspin the wheel on Zillow agents” strategy; she talks with you, understands your situation, and connects you with someone who actually fits (relocating, first-time buyer, downsizing, investing, all of it). It costs you nothing (the agents pay her) and it’s a much smarter first step than falling down a late-night Zillow rabbit hole wondering why every listing says β€œcharming.” Book a time with her here.
