If you're new to Frisco, here's something worth knowing: the city got its first new mayor in nearly a decade. Mark Hill was sworn in July 7 after Jeff Cheney's 18-year run in city government (nine as mayor), and last Thursday Hill gave his first State of the City address at the Frisco Chamber's annual luncheon at Embassy Suites.

Why it matters for you: Hill inherits a city that's added roughly 100,000 residents in the last decade and is now navigating what Cheney's team called "a new stage of maturity." That means the era of holding taxes flat while growth paid for everything is ending (hence the first tax rate increase in nine years), infrastructure is under pressure, and decisions about what Frisco becomes next are being made right now.

Hill has said his priorities are infrastructure, public safety, and making sure Frisco's growth doesn't outpace the services residents actually depend on. If any of that resonates, the second budget public hearing on Sept. 1 is the place to show up and weigh in.

The Dallas-born coffee and matcha chain just opened its first Frisco location with drive-thru service, outdoor seating, and a menu of lattes, matcha, avocado toast, and light bites. Beyond the drinks, the brand runs paid internships specifically designed to help young people transition out of foster care into adulthood. Grand opening was Aug. 15 with a Chamber ribbon cutting.

💰 Your trash bill is going down. Council approved a new 10-year contract with Waste Connection Lone Star on Aug. 18 that cuts residential trash and recycling rates 10%, from $15.39 to $13.85/month. New bins with the city logo and a QR code linking to recycling info will roll out through 2027. A rare win where the city bill actually goes down.

🏈 Cowboys Training Camp Day 2 is tomorrow. Last chance: Wed Aug. 26, Tostitos Championship Plaza at 4PM, Ford Center at 4:30PM. Free admission, free parking, first-come first-served.

🎱 US Open Pool Championship is underway. The 49th US Open 9-ball tournament is running all week at Rollertown, 256 of the world's best players competing through Sunday.

📱 Frisco mapped 200+ buildings for emergency response. Facilities Dive reported today that Frisco's SAFER system, which started in 2008 as indoor mapping of schools for first responders, now covers over 200 buildings citywide including hospitals and Cowboys HQ. The system gives responders real-time access to floor plans, camera feeds, and critical infrastructure during emergencies.

Meadow Hill Drive east of Rogers Road remains closed for underground utility work, expected to reopen early September. Ongoing pavement replacement continues on Alstone Dr, Brunswick Isles Way, and Preston Trace Rd.
