Plot twist: Council just killed the tax rate increase. After two public hearings and weeks of debate, they've directed staff to keep the property tax rate flat. The water and sewer hikes are still on the table, but the $9/month property tax hit? Gone. Also: Paws in the Pool is this Saturday, and North Texas Giving Day is next week.

If you've been following this story since we first reported the proposed 3.71% property tax increase in August, here's the update: it's not happening.

On Sept. 3, City Council directed staff to keep the FY27 property tax rate at the current .425517 - the same rate adopted for FY26. That means the roughly $9/month increase for the average homeowner that was proposed in the original budget is off the table.

What's still on the table: the 9% water rate increase, the 5% sewer increase (about $9.99/month combined), and the 10% stormwater increase ($0.73/month). The $325.3 million budget with 62 new city positions and $5.4 million in police and fire raises also moves forward. The final vote on everything is Sept. 15 at Council Chambers, starting at approximately 6:30PM.

For homeowners, the bottom line just improved by about $9/month compared to what was originally proposed. Your water and sewer bills are still going up, but your property tax rate stays flat for the 10th consecutive year.
